About Bankso

Bansko ski resort is situated in South-Western Bulgaria at the foot hills of on of the beautiful Bulgarian Pirin mountains аnd surrounded by the Rila and the Rhodope mountains. The Pirin Mountains are a natural preserve included in the World Natural Heritage list. 

Bansko is situated 160 km from the international airport of Bulgaria's capital city – Sofia, where flights to and from are landing and taking off every day.  Transfer time is approximately 3 hours. You can reach Bansko either by flying into Sofia airport and driving to the south, or by flying into Thessalonica (Salonica) in Greece, and driving three hours to the north.

Skiing in Bansko

The town of Bansko is located on 925 meters above sea level, and its skiing area is on 2000-2500 meters above sea level. The skiing conditions in Bansko are excellent. The Pirin Mountains have a predominantly Alpine character with 2 peaks towering above 2900 m.  However, the slopes offer runs and tracks for all types of skiers and will suit both beginners and experts alike.  Bansko has a great snow record, offering excellent skiing conditions.

The ski season starts in the middle of December and ends in mid April. The 2 major ski areas are situated above the town, on the northern slopes of the Pirin Mountains, approx. 10 km from the town.  Bansko offers several types of runs, from the Slalom and Giant Slalom to the 5km cross-country track.  A 3 km ski run Rollbahn track is situated 2 km from the town.  The runs are serviced by comfortable lifts and drags, including an 8-seats Gondola cable car manufactured by Dopplemayer, five 4 - seat lifts (Doppelmayer), one 3-seat lift (Poma), 7 drags and 10 baby drags.

Bansko has a traditional atmosphere with very lively leisure-time activities: tobogganing, mountain trips and excellent evening entertainment.  Bansko offers a wide variety of choices among old-style pubs and taverns, restaurants offering traditional local food, disco clubs and coffee shops in the old town.

Bansko also attracts visitors with its 120 cultural monuments, museums and the permanent ethnographic exhibitions.  A very interesting sight is The Holly Trinity church with its 30 m high bell tower and clock, splendid murals and woodcarvings, the midlevel church "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" with its remarkable wood-carved iconostasis make for fine accents in Bansko's atmosphere. Remarkable as architectural monuments and examples of fine art are the Velyanova, Benina, Sirleshtova, Todeva, Molerova, Dragostinova, Sharkova houses.  Also noteworthy are the souvenir shops and romantic holiday residences, hotels and taverns cuddled in the narrow and picturesque streets.

Bansko offers diverse sports and cultural program all year around.  During the warm months of the year the town hosts a number of local, national and international annual festivals, concerts, celebrations and exhibitions, including the folklore festival “Between three mountains”, the international jazz festival and a number of rock concerts.

Bansko offers many interesting trips: to Melnik and the Rozhen Monastery, to the Rila Monastery, to Sofia, Plovdiv and the Monastery of Bachkovo, to Sandanski and Velingrad, and a package tour to the Semkovo ski centre in Rila Mountain (40 minutes by car) for a day's skiing in another resort.
